OKOTOKS – Laura Walker came away victorious in the battle between two undefeated Edmonton rinks in the 2020 Alberta Scotties at the Murray Arena in Okotoks.
The Walker rink continued its hot streak downing Kelsey Rocque 8-4, to remain undefeated in the tournament.
Walker jumped out to a strong 3-0 lead after the opening end of the fourth draw.
“In the first end we got lucky with a roll out early, which allowed us to throw that corner guard and then we just kept our rocks in play,” said Walker. “At that point we knew we were set up for two and if there was another miss then we could get a third.”
The Rocque rink was also undefeated heading into the evening draw and answered back in the second with a pair of points, cutting the lead to one. However, Walker scored another three in the third, opening up a commanding four-point lead.
“We missed a lot of opportunities and they played really well and capitalized. We have to take away what we learned tonight and use it going forward,” said Rocque. “We’ve played from behind before but against a really good team like that it’s tough. Especially after falling behind by a large margin early on.”
After seven ends of play, Rocque conceded, her rink’s first loss in the provincial championships.
With the win, the Walker rink may well be one of the early favourites in the tournament. Walker insists her team is not thinking about the standings.
“We still have three games left to play but we have put ourselves into a really great position for the rest of the week and we definitely have some confidence, said Walker. “We’re just in our own bubble doing our own thing, but of course when you start undefeated – eyes are going to turn your way.”
Eyes will also be on Casey Scheidegger, as her rink had a bounce back day earning two victories to go with their two losses yesterday.
“This is only my fourth game of the entire season so obviously still shaking some of the rust out, and we wanted to rebound today,” said Scheidegger, who gave birth in November to a son, Ryder. “We had a really good team talk last night about staying positive and having fun regardless.”
Facing the third-seeded Kayla Skrlik, Scheidegger easily defeated the young Calgary rink 9-2.
“We still have lots to build on and have some tough games ahead. We are feeling good and just not trying to get a head of ourselves at this point," Scheidegger said.
Krysta Hilker was able to rebound from a third draw loss earlier in the day defeating Jodi Vaughan 7-5. Hiker scored her third four-point end of the tournament leading to her third victory of the tournament.
The final match of the fourth draw saw Marla Sherrer face off against Nicky Kaufman, the only winless teams in the Scotties.
The draw saw three lead changes in a back and forth affair. Sherrer opened the first two ends with a 4-0 lead, which was then erased by Kaufman’s rink in the fourth. Kaufman pulled ahead by one in the seventh before Sherrer clawed back in the next two ends to take the lead heading into the final end. The final 8-6 decision went the way of Sherrer.
