Trail closure until further notice following bear altercation

KANANASKIS COUNTRY – A bear encounter resulting in minor injuries has forced the closure of a popular trail near Canmore.

Lady Macdonald Trail in Kananaskis Country is shut down until further notice after the incident on Saturday (July 22).

“Area closed due to a surprise encounter with a black bear that resulted in human contact and minor injuries,” said a report by Alberta Environment and Parks.

The report did not specify the type of injuries or how many people were involved.

Nearby trails are under a bear warning until further notice, including the Horseshoe Loop and Montane Trail, Cougar Creek Trail, Grotto Mountain Trail, G8 trail, Meander trail and Johnny’s Trail.

The Outlook will update when more information is available.

To help prevent a surprise bear encounter, Alberta Environment and Parks recommends:

  • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for bears and their signs.
  • Keep your pet on a leash.
