BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPLIES

Cochranite Palwinder Singh is looking for donations of school supplies for families in need. Singh is a member of the board of directors on the Cochrane Immigrant Services Association, and the Cochrane Society for Housing Options, although this initiative is a personal one started by him and some friends. Their initial goal was to sponsor 15 children, but due to the overwhelming support, they have been able to sponsor 18 students. Singh said he suspects they will be able to support up to 22 kids if more donations are received. If you know of a student you would like to nominate for a sponsorship, or would like to organize a donation, email Singh at [email protected]. The first set of supplies was delivered on Wednesday (Aug. 26).

FOOD DRIVE AND FIREWORKS

Although the annual Labour Day Rodeo has been cancelled the Cochrane Lions Club is still giving the community something to look forward to this September long weekend. On Sept. 1, 2 and 3, the Lions will be visiting different communities in Cochrane, collecting non-perishable food donations. The drive will finish on Monday (Sept. 7), with a final drop off location where the food will be stacked on a float for the Cochrane Parade. There will also be a fireworks display over Mitford Park that same evening. Follow the Cochrane Lions Club on Facebook and Instagram for details about donation drop off locations.

WEATHER THE STORM

Historic Downtown Cochrane is offering umbrellas on loan to all visitors and locals, to ensure all visitors feel safe, welcome and dry while visiting the unique shopping district. Travel Alberta and Cochrane Tourism partnered up to distribute the umbrellas, which are a visual demonstration that small business is alive and thriving in Cochrane. The promotion is meant to complement the Town of Cochrane’s Open and Safe campaign while reminding visitors and locals that the town is open for business. The umbrellas will serve as a symbol Cochrane is ready to weather the COVID-19 storm.
