MONTREAL — Three people are dead and one is injured after a car hit a tree and caught fire south of Montreal.

Emergency services were called to the accident site in St-Paul-de-l'Île-aux-Noix at about 10 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Provincial police spokesperson Laurie Avoine says the car was travelling southbound when it left its lane, went into a ditch and hit a tree.

It then burst into flames.

Three of the vehicle's occupants died on site, while an 18-year-old woman escaped and was taken to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Avoine says it's too early to know if speed, alcohol or drugs might have been a factor.
