CLEVELAND (AP) — Jake Fraley, had three hits, including a home run in the fourth inning, Wade Miley got his first win since 2023 and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Cleveland Guardians 7-4 Monday night in Terry Francona’s return to Progressive Field.
TJ Friedl also went deep for the Reds, who have won four straight and are over .500 for the first time since May 19.
Bo Naylor had a solo shot for Cleveland. The Guardians have dropped four of five overall and have lost all four of their meetings with the Reds this season.
Francona managed Cleveland for 11 seasons (2013-23) before being hired by the Reds last October.
Miley (1-0) got the win in his second game and first start since signing a one-year deal with the Reds on June 4. He went five innings and allowed three runs and five hits.
PIRATES 10, MARLINS 3
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Bryan Reynolds hit a bases-loaded triple to cap a four-run third inning and Pittsburgh beat the skidding Miami for their season-high fourth straight win.
Reynolds put the Pirates ahead 4-1 with a line drive to the gap in right-center field off Eury Perez (0-1), who was making his first major league start since Sept. 20, 2023, after recovering from Tommy John surgery. Reynolds’ hit came after Andrew McCutchen had an RBI infield single.
All nine Pirates had hits, and McCutchen and Adam Frazier paced a 15-hit attack with three apiece. Brett Sullivan had two RBIs in his Pirates debut after being called up Saturday from Triple-A Indianapolis.
Perez lasted just three innings and gave up four runs and four hits. He had five strikeouts and two walks while throwing 70 pitches as the Marlins lost for the eighth time in their last nine games.
Despite missing so much time, Perez is still the youngest pitcher in the major leagues at 22 years, 55 days.
The Pirates broke the game open with a four-run sixth that included two throwing errors by the Marlins on Ke’Bryan Hayes’ bunt single. That put Pittsburgh ahead 8-2.
The Marlins’ Otto Lopez hit a leadoff home run in the second inning, his sixth, to open the scoring. Miami lost for the eighth time in nine games.
Pirates rookie starter Mike Burrows allowed two runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings with six strikeouts and three walks. Caleb Ferguson (2-0) pitched two perfect innings.
BRAVES 7, BREWERS 1
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Chris Sale struck out a season-high 11 while allowing just one run over seven innings as Atlanta snapped a seven-game skid by beating Milwaukee.
Matt Olson, Ronald Acuña Jr. and Eli White homered to make sure the Braves avoided their first eight-game losing streak since 2016.
Sale (4-4) allowed just five hits and two walks. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner has given up just four runs over 33 innings in his last five starts.
Atlanta led 5-1 when Sale left after walking Brice Turang to start the eighth. Raisel Iglesias took over for Sale and got three straight outs to lower his ERA to 6.48 before Dylan Lee worked the ninth.
PHILLIES 4, CUBS 3, 11 INNINGS
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Brandon Marsh singled home the winning run in the 11th inning after Philadelphia used two bunt hits to load the bases and beat the Chicago Cubs.
Ian Happ tied it at 2 for the Cubs on a solo homer off reliever Matt Strahm in the eighth. Pete Crow-Armstrong hit an RBI double in the 11th off Carlos Hernández (1-0) for a 3-2 lead.
J.T. Realmuto made it 3-all when he drove in the automatic runner with a single off Daniel Palencia (0-2). The Phillies then improbably got two straight bunt singles — the first from rookie third baseman and undrafted Division II prospect Otto Kemp, who had the third of his first three big league hits in the game. Bryson Stott — a late-inning replacement after he was benched amid a 2-for-24 slump — also bunted for a hit to set up the clutch swing from Marsh.
RAYS 10, RED SOX 8, 11 INNINGS
BOSTON (AP) — Jake Mangum had four hits, and Junior Caminero drew a bases-loaded walk in the 11th inning as Tampa Bay Rays took advantage of Boston mistakes and spoil the debut of top Red Sox prospect Roman Anthony.
Tampa loaded the bases off Zack Kelly in the 11th and Caminero took a 3-2 pitch for a walk. Mangum followed with a chopper to the right side that was fielded by first baseman Romy Gonzalez, but his throw to Kelly (1-3) was awkward and late.
Ian Seymour pitched two innings in his major league debut for the victory as Tampa won for the sixth time in seven games.
Anthony was hitless in four at-bats, with one walk and an RBI groundout in the ninth that cut the deficit to 7-6. Kristian Campbell followed by hitting a high chopper over the mound and beating the throw to first for a game-tying single.
BLUE JAYS 5, CARDINALS 4, 10 INNINGS
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Alejandro Kirk homered and had four hits, including a go-ahead double in the 10th inning as Toronto rallied in a victory over St. Louis.
Kirk opened the 10th with a double off Phil Maton (0-2) to score automatic runner Addison Barger from second base. Jeff Hoffman then pitched a 1-2-3 inning for his 16th save in 19 opportunities, helping the Blue Jays (36-30) win for the 10th time in 12 games.
After blowing a three-run lead in the eighth, Toronto tied it at 4 in the ninth when No. 9 batter Jonatan Clase hit his first home run this year and the second of his career — a one-out shot off Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley.
Kirk launched his fourth home run, a solo shot, on a full-count pitch from reliever Riley O’Brien for a 3-0 lead in the eighth.
But in the bottom half, Willson Contreras doubled home the first St. Louis run and Iván Herrera hit a three-run homer off Yariel Rodríguez (1-0) to give the Cardinals a 4-3 lead.
Rodríguez, who entered with two on and two outs in a 3-0 game, had allowed just one of 13 inherited runners to score this season.
Blue Jays starter José Berríos allowed two hits in 6 2/3 shutout innings.
ANGELS 7, ATHLETICS 4
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Yusei Kikuchi took a one-hit shutout into the eighth inning and Jo Adell homered and drove in three runs to help the Los Angeles Angels beat the Athletics.
Mike Trout had two RBIs for the Angels, who shook off the latest incredible catch by Athletics rookie Denzel Clarke in center field.
Kikuchi (2-5) yielded just a one-out single to Max Muncy in the fifth and exited after striking out Nick Kurtz with his 104th pitch to begin the eighth. The left-hander struck out five and walked one in a brilliant outing.
Muncy and pinch-hitter JJ Bleday homered late for the Athletics.
DODGERS 8, PADRES 7, 10 INNINGS
SAN DIEGO (AP) —Andy Pages led off the 10th inning with an RBI double before scoring on Tommy Edman’s single, and the Los Angeles Dodgers hung on to open their season series against San Diego.
Will Smith homered and drove in three runs in the first of seven meetings in 11 days between the Southern California rivals. It’s also a rematch of their NL Division Series last October, when the Dodgers rallied from a 2-1 deficit to eliminate San Diego with back-to-back shutouts in what proved to be their toughest playoff test on the way to a World Series championship.
After Pages delivered yet another clutch hit off Wandy Peralta (3-1), Edman brought him home with a fortunate bouncer that ricocheted off second base.
Jackson Merrill slugged a one-out RBI double in the 10th for San Diego, but Tanner Scott finished for his 12th save.
Kirby Yates (4-2) struck out two in a hitless ninth.
Tyler Wade had a three-run triple for the Padres, who have lost four of six.
DIAMONDBACKS 8, MARINERS 4
PHOENIX (AP) — Josh Naylor hit a game-ending grand slam in the 11th inning and Arizona beat Seattle after losing closer Justin Martinez with two outs in the ninth and then blowing a four-run lead.
Corbin Carroll launched a leadoff homer and Naylor had three hits and five RBIs for the Diamondbacks, who stopped a three-game skid.
Martinez entered to start the ninth with Arizona leading 4-0 and struck out Jorge Polanco and Randy Arozarena to begin the inning. The right-hander then walked Dylan Moore on a full count and threw a pitch to Donovan Solano before calling for an athletic trainer.
Jeff Brigham came in and gave up RBI singles to Solano and Cole Young before Dominic Canzone tied it with a 450-foot, two-run drive to right field for his first homer this season.
Juan Morillo retired slugger Cal Raleigh with two runners aboard to finally end the inning.
Morillo then pitched a perfect 10th and Jalen Beeks (2-0) got three straight outs in the 11th.
Naylor homered to right-center with one out on a 1-2 pitch from Carlos Vargas (1-5), who was working his second inning in relief. Vargas loaded the bases with a walk to Geraldo Perdomo that followed an intentional walk to Ketel Marte.
