AHS warns of measles exposure in south Calgary

An individual with measles visited several locations in south Calgary last weekend while contagious, AHS said
Alberta Public Health issued a public health alert after a confirmed case of the measles in Banff last week.
Alberta Health Services says measles exposure was possible at several locations in south Calgary last week.

Health officials say people may have been exposed to measles at several locations in south Calgary last week.

Alberta Health Services said individuals who were in the following locations during the specified dates and times may have been exposed to the illness:

  • Cineplex Cinema in Seton on May 23 and 24 from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m.
  • Amenida Residences and Hotel, on Macleod Trail, on May 24 between 1 a.m. and 12 p.m.
  • Ikea, on 11 Street S.E., on May 24 from noon to 5 p.m.

People who visited those locations at those times are being asked to self-monitor for measles symptoms until June 14.

Those born in or after 1970, who have less than two doses of the measles vaccine, may be at risk of developing the illness, AHS said.

Measles is extremely contagious and the best protection against the illness is immunization, AHS said.

There have been 654 confirmed cases of measles this year in Alberta, and 24 are considered contagious.

Most reported cases of the illness are in children under five years old and those aged five to 17 who are not immunized, AHS said.

Twelve cases of measles have been reported in the Calgary area this year.
