After reading an Airdrie City View article about a Black Widow spider in a home in Sagewood, another Airdrie woman now says she has found one in her home as well.

Poster Michelle Donohue writes on the Community of Airdrie Facebook page : "Just saw a post earlier about a black widow ….Comments turned off so can’t ask what they did. I came home from Cochrane, to hear we also have one on our garage siding too. AND… she’s apparently has two large egg sacks hiding behind the trim on the right."

Donohue goes on to ask advice about getting rid of Black Widows.

According to Orkin Canada, the pest control brand, perhaps the best way to remove Black Widows from the home is to use a vacuum cleaner.

"Sweep up the spiders as well as their webs and egg sacs, and promptly dispose of the vacuum bag in an outdoor trash receptacle," the company advises. "If possible, seal the bag in durable plastic. For larger infestations of Black Widows, call a professional pest control service for effective and appropriate management and control."

According to the Government of Canada, the Black Widow "spins a small, silk web close to the ground and is found in secluded places like garages and sheds, or under rocks or fallen trees when outside. It is not aggressive and prefers fleeing when disturbed, so it will only bite to defend itself."
