Cultures collided on Saturday, May 3rd at Century Downs Racetrack with "Cinco de Derby."
Two big events, the Kentucky Derby and Cinco de Mayo, occurred on roughly the same weekend - leading to an array of celebrations amid the usual Standardbred racing.
The racetrack in Balzac featured its harness races as the 151st Kentucky Derby was live-streamed at a special party in the Off-Track Betting (OTB) lounge. People were dressed up with fancy hats and outfits to suit the occasion.
After the live horses wrapped up, Century Downs' famous annual Chihuahua race took place with an excited crowd cheering on the tiny dogs - many of them sporting costumes.
All in good fun, 40 chihuahuas raced in two separate weight categories and six different heats. The top three finalists took home gift baskets sponsored by Petland.
The reining champ, Mojito, returned to win it all once again.
Free craft beer and tequila tastings also took place to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, along with traditional Mexican folk dancers.
Cinco de Mayo is an annual celebration held on May 5 to celebrate Mexico's victory over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. The day has evolved over time, becoming more popular in the United States than in Mexico as a day to celebrate its culture.
