Katy Perry fans recreate iconic look for Edmonton concert

A shared love for Katy Perry and a passion for creativity led two Alberta women on a unique journey.

Two Katy Perry fans, Mel Tonsi and Sara Gillis, wanted to add to the magic of getting to see Katy Perry live in concert in Edmonton on July 24.

They decided to commemorate Perry’s iconic look from the premiere of her movie “Katy Perry: Part of Me”, which happened in Hollywood in June 2012.

“It took us six months to create the costumes,” said Tonsi.

“It was an amazing night! People were asking to take our pictures.”

The costumes consisted of a top with a film canister bra and film for straps.

The girls wore black tank tops under the strips of film connecting the canisters.

The skirt was designed to look like Perry’s with red and white vertical stripes in a bell shape.

Under the skirt edge popcorn-colored crinoline netting showed.

Purple wigs topped off the dazzling ensemble.

Tonsi and Gillis received several compliments on their attire at the concert.

It was a night they will remember for the rest of their lives.

Was all that work worth it?

Tonsi was still feeling the exuberating emotions two days later.

That specific outfit was a unique, highly theatrical costume that had been designed for Perry for the movie premiere as per a US magazine article.

Perry had emerged from a giant popcorn bag on stage as part of the performance at the premiere.
