BANFF – A sinkhole has forced the closure of the eastbound lane of the Trans-Canada Highway between the Mount Norquay entrance to the Banff townsite and Compound Road.
Banff RCMP said traffic is currently being diverted through town, which is expected to cause delays.
The Town of Banff confirmed the closure is due to a sinkhole.
"Engineers are on site to determine temporary solutions and long-term repairs," states an alert from the Town of Banff.
Currently, all eastbound highway traffic is being detoured at Norquay Road into the Banff townsite, left at Railway Avenue, down Elk Street to Banff Avenue and north back to the Trans-Canada Highway.
"Please stay away from this detour route to allow transport vehicles to move through safely," states the Town.
The eastbound lane was closed around 2:15 p.m. and 511 Alberta will provide an update at 4 p.m.
