One of the easiest (and most overlooked) ways to keep your furnace running efficiently is by changing the filter. A clean filter improves airflow, protects your system, and helps maintain healthier indoor air—all while potentially lowering your energy bills.
Keeps airflow steady and reduces strain on your furnace
Prevents dirt buildup, extending your system’s lifespan
Helps reduce energy use
Traps dust, dander, and allergens for better air quality
Typically, every 1–3 months depending on the type of filter, your home environment, and if you have pets or allergies.
A new filter (match the size on your old one) – you can order replacements from our online store
Flashlight if your furnace is in a dark space
Optional: gloves or a mask if it’s especially dusty
Turn Off the Furnace
Shut off the thermostat or power to prevent the fan from turning on mid-change.
Find the Filter Compartment
Usually located near the return air duct or behind a panel.
Remove the Old Filter
Slide it out gently. Note the airflow arrow printed on the frame.
Check and Match Filter Size
Look for dimensions on the old filter (e.g., 16x25x1).
Insert the New Filter
Align the airflow arrow and slide it in securely.
There are a few types of filters to choose from—fiberglass, pleated, or high-efficiency options—and each has its benefits depending on your system and air quality needs.
