Cochrane will celebrate Canada’s sesquicentennial year by bringing together 150 voices to close out next year’s Rotary Youth Talent Festival.

“We just wanted to do something that was 150 celebration-related,” said organizer Cyndie Baum. “How better to do this than build a big group of people? 150 Voices just sounded like a crazy but wonderful idea.”

Anyone who wants to be part of the musical group is eligible to register, with forms available for pickup now at Cochrane Toyota in Riversong.

Those who do will receive a copy of an original song – written by Cochrane musician Alanna Clarke – ahead of time to rehearse on their own throughout the summer.

“We’re only going to have a couple of rehearsals,” said Baum, adding choir members will be self-directed through most of the process and will come together to practise before the big event.

Melanie Baux has taken on the task of directing such a large ensemble of singers, with sponsors to help with costuming and a choreographer to work with the group on movement. First Nations drummers and dancers will also be part of the presentation.

Baum said the 150 Voices choir will perform the finale of the Rotary Youth Talent Festival on Nov. 10 at RockPointe Church.

“We really want this to be a Cochrane project,” said Baum. “It’s going to be fun.”
