March 20 officially marked the first day of spring, and while the weather hasn’t co-operated, there will be plenty of warm weather activities taking place in the month of April as the community hopes Mother Nature follows suite.
The month will kick off with a slew of events on April 7. The Cochrane Agriculture Society will be hosting a Quarter Horse Show at the Agriculture Society Grounds, where each competitor takes part in a quarter mile or less horse race. The event will start at 7 a.m. and will continue throughout the evening … spectators are welcome.
Deja Brew will be hosting a Spring Community Craft Fair at Killarney’s Family Pub from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. It’s a free family event, with local vendors. There will also be food and drinks and arts and crafts for children.
To cap off the day, St. Andrew’s Church and four talented local musicians have teamed up to put on a fun-filled night of music and community, all for a good cause. The Songwriter’s Showcase is a concert and silent auction aimed to raise funds for the Boys and Girls Club of Cochrane and Area (BGCCA). Proceeds from the event will go towards helping the BGCCA fund its teen space as well as the club. The goal of the new space is to provide a platform for local youth to build a community for themselves and have a second home full of life-long friends. Allen Christie, Jakey Jives, Katie Allison and Jason Cote will provide musical talent. Tickets are $20 each and are available at the St. Andrew’s United Church, BGCCA and from Jason Cote at 403-796-3121- Doors open at 7 p.m. and the concert will start at 8.
ClubHouse Art Walk from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the ClubHouse located at the Historic Cochrane Ranche, local artists show and sell their work, giving Cochrane and area are lovers the opportunity to meet the artists and learn about their creations.
The Foothills Art Club will also be hosting its Annual Spring Show and Sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the St. Andrew’s United Church. There is free admission as well as a free draw of an original painting.
It will be a busy day as the monthly Cochrane Spring Farmers’ Market will be back at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre to set up indoors until the park is ready for the outdoor season.
The first annual Spring Barn Dance hosted by the Cochrane Lions Club as a rodeo fundraiser will be held from 7 p.m. until midnight. People are invited to the Cochrane Lions Events Centre to two-step the night away and wear your best western wear.
There will also be a Saint George’s Day Pub Crawl on April 21 hosted by Deja Brew. The crawl will visit five independent venues and will include food and beverage sampling and main evening meal for $50 in order to celebrate England’s Saint George’s Day.
