Film lovers are in for a treat as Bragg Creek and Kananaskis Outdoor Recreation (BCKOR) is set to for the return of the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival Sept. 9.
This year’s event is much anticipated after water damage in the community centre last year prevented the festival from happening.
“We’ve almost sold out every year,” said Shaun Peter, who has of the event for six years. “I think a big part of Bragg Creek is outdoors.”
Most of the short films target the outdoor scene – combining the love of outdoors and filmmaking.
“We’ve had a really good response every year – there are a lot of re-attenders,” Peter stated. “It’s interesting to see your own backyard featured in some of the films.”
Peter and his wife, Jessica, moved to Bragg Creek as a way to be more engulfed in mountain culture. He is an air traffic controller and his wife is a nurse.
This festival combines his two favourite things – movies and mountains. Peter previously helped as a volunteer to bring the Banff Film Festival to his hometown of Regina.
Many communities from the surrounding areas come out and make this a day event in various ways – like going for a hike then attending the festival.
A sponsor and attendee of the event Troy Delfs, owner of Momentum Cycling, said he loves the community aspect.
“It brings together the communities,” he said. “Similar people … similar interests.”
The money raised from a silent auction will be split between Moose Mountain Bike Trail Society and Greater Bragg Creek Trails Association – the money is used to fully support the outdoors lifestyle and to create and maintain hiking trails in Elbow Valley. In 2015 $4,457 was raised.
This fun-filled event will be packed with various genres of films that will get your adrenaline pumping – The festival will be held at the Bragg Creek Community Centre.
Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m.
