Cochrane High School’s drama class will be presenting its annual play on Jan. 16.

This year’s play titled Dark Road is about a young girl by the name of Greta, living in Nazi Germany, who reads that a nearby women’s concentration camp is hiring guards. She sees it as a chance to find her place in the world and provide for her sister, Lise. She soon learns the reality of her duties, but also how to justify her crimes, heading further and further down the dark road laid by the Third Reich. Kind-hearted Lise is shocked at what her sister becomes and though the two drift apart, their fates remain inexplicably and dangerously linked. It’s a powerful drama about choices that allow evil to become ordinary.

Laura Lundgen Smith, who has been a play write since 1999, originally wrote Dark Road. Lundgren Smith’s plays have had more than 200 award winning productions in Texas, Georgia, Tennessee and Missouri.

Hannah Kinch as well as Madi Vermeulen will direct the play and student Christine Allen said everyone involved has put a lot of hard work into its making.

“I am really excited to be part of this play. Everyone has worked so hard and put so much time into it that we can’t wait to share it with the Town of Cochrane,” Allen said.

“I hope that the community enjoys watching it as much as we’ve enjoyed putting it together.”

Allen also talked about the staff and students’ motivation behind the play.

“The play was chosen to correspond with what is being taught in social studies and history,” Allen said.

“It is supposed to be used to teach us how to empathize with the characters that you would normally not have core values with.”

Tickets for the play are being sold for $5. They can be bought at the door at Cochrane High the night of the play or at www.eventbrite.ca.

Dark Road is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at Cochrane High School.
