Cochrane will celebrate Canada’s contribution to cinema with a free screening of a classic coming-of-age movie.

The Chinook Film Group will present a free screening of My American Cousin at the Cochrane Movie House on April 19 to honour National Canadian Film Day 150.

The coast-to-coast-to-coast event, co-sponsored by the Toronto International Film Festival Film Circuit, is one of 1,700 screenings taking place across the country and is being billed as the largest one-day film festival in the world.

Set in Penticton, BC, in the 1950s and based on director Sandy Wilson’s own childhood, My American Cousin is the story of a pre-teen girl who is swept away with excitement and gets a glimpse of adulthood when her older American cousin, Butch Walker, surprises the family with a visit.

The film was released in 1985, earned 12 Genie Awards nominations and won six, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Margaret Langrick also won Best Actress for her performance as Sandy and went on to star in Harry and the Hendersons – another classic of its time.

My American Cousin has since become a national treasure.

Tickets for the 7 p.m. screening next Wednesday are available at The Gentry Espresso & Wine Bar and Tea … And Other Things. Those who live out of town can reach out to [email protected] for entry.

Since the event is being offered at no charge, the Chinook Film Group asks those who pick up a ticket but aren’t able to attend to pass it on to someone else who can.
