The Cochrane Music Society will be hosting its 2017 Music of Christmas concert on Dec. 14.
The Music Society is a non-profit organization, which was formed back in 1999 by parents of children who were in the school music program. Over the years, the organization has grown to include concert bands, jazz bands as well as choirs.
This year’s version of the Christmas concert will be held at a new venue – the Bow Valley Baptist Church and the music varies from classical to contemporary, from sacred to folk, from gospel to jazz, all of which are highlighted with Christmas tunes.
Treasurer, website and director of communications, Jane Kaczmer, says the Christmas concert is a staple of the church’s musical season.
“We routinely do a Christmas concert, as well as a spring concert. This year we introduced a fall concert as well,” Kaczmer said.
“The December concert is all three of our ensembles, the concert, the jazz band and the choir … and we’ve been doing this since the beginning. This is one of the normal concerts that we do every year.”
“In the past, the choir has done mostly Christmas songs, but the jazz and concert band would usually do one or two songs and then most of their repertoire has actually been non-Christmas songs … but this year by having a fall concert, it allows us to make this concert almost entirely holiday season based.”
In the past, the concert took place at the Cochrane Alliance Church but Kaczmer highlights the fact that the new venue at the Bow Valley Baptist Church will give the concert new opportunities.
“This is a new venue for us, we have not used the (Bow Valley Baptist) Church before, and we’re excited to try out a different venue. This venue allows us to have everyone on stage at the same time, going from one ensemble to the next without having to make any changes in the midst of the concert,” Kaczmer said.
The concert is free to the public, but the music society just asks that attendees bring a non-perishable food item … the concert starts at 7:30 p.m.
