Western Canada senior writers are getting more time to apply for a unique award that encourages sharing their lifetime of experience on the page.

The third annual Cedric Literary Awards offer unpublished writers ages 50 and up a chance to win $3,000 each in a number of categories, including fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry and First Nations writing.

The original May 1 deadline for submissions has been extended to 12 midnight on June 1, to give wordsmiths from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and the Yukon more hours in the chair to finish crafting their pieces.

More than 300 writers from B.C. have entered their work into the juried contest since its inception in 2015.

This is the first year the boundaries expanded to include writers in neighbouring provinces, which organizers hope is the first step to eventually growing their platform for emerging writers 50-plus across the country.
