Local director Eppo Eerkes is starting a new adventure surrounding National Parks in Alberta.

Eerkes has been working as a director for at least 20 years, and has experience in documentaries, as well as working with television networks including CTV, CBC, Animal Planet, History and Discovery.

He just recently finished a couple pieces for Travel Alberta that highlights the beauty of our province as well as some recognizable faces. Eerkes is now looking forward to his new task.

“I have worked for Alberta Parks and Travel Alberta in the past … I just finished off some pieces for Travel Alberta that includes (Canadian bobsledder and Olympic gold medallist) Kaillie Humphries that shows off her need for speed while also promoting WinSport and Canadian Olympic Park (COP). I did another one on the Badlands as well as a local beer producer, so those are being released,” Eerkes said.

“Right now, I’m working with Alberta Parks, which is a completely separate provincial government piece but still an exciting adventure. In the past, I’ve gone out in the wilderness and told the stories of our great natural areas … I’m going out to Ghost River Wilderness Area and are collecting footage to tell the stories of places that very few people would know about the (Ghost River) Wild Land Park.”

“I’m going to catch all the film footage of all the natural areas, do some back country skiing … this is something that I thrive off of, being able to tell stories about wildlife and nature because that really is my thing.”

On top of shooting Ghost River, Eerkes will also be travelling to other places in Alberta.

“I will also be going to Castle Wildland Provincial Park, located near the Crowsnest Pass as well as Pincher Creek. It’s a newer park, only a year old, and I was hired exclusively to shoot all self-photography, all the video footage and package a series of videos that are going to be released on social media and coming out next year … these will be released in the fall, but I will have them all done by the end of March,” Eerkes said.

“It will be a huge opportunity for me to explore. Mainly it’s going to be showcasing all the easy things that people are able to do in any of these parks around here … whether it’s ice fishing, simple snowshoe trips or doing a night snowshoe trip to look at the stars and get away from the big cities.”

“It just gives you a glimpse about what’s out there in our own backyard that’s only 45 minutes to an hour away from you and then you’re right there and in the elements. That’s what I’m excited about.”

“The videos will be two-minute, 60-seconds or 30-second pieces, and will be compressed storytelling about what’s happening here in our own backyard.”
