The Chinook Film Group kicked off its Winter Series with the screening of The Trip To Spain on Jan. 17 and is set for its second offering with Rebel In The Rye on Feb. 21 at the Cochrane Movie House.
Rebel In The Rye is a 2017 American biographical drama directed and written by Danny Strong. It is based on the book titled J.D. Salinger: A Life written by Kenneth Slawenski, a story about the life of writer J.D. Salinger during and after the Second World War. The film stars Nicholas Hoult, Zoey Deutch, Kevin Spacey, Sarah Paulson and many more. The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 25, 2017, and was released by IFC Films on Sept. 8, 2017.
The 106-minute details Salinger’s relationship with socialite Oona O’Neill (Zoey Deutch), his experiences fighting in the Second World War, and his writing process for The Catcher in Rye. Spacey plays Whit Burnett, a lecturer at Columbia University, editor of the Story magazine, and a mentor of a young Salinger … Sarah Paulson portrays Dorothy Olding, the loyal agent who supported Salinger throughout his career. Canadian Victor Garber plays Sol Salinger, J.D.’s father and Hope Davis acts as Miriam Salinger, J.D.’s mother.
Rebel In The Rye had a limited release in four theatres in its first week, which was expanded to 45 more screens in its second week. In its first week of release, the film made $44,280 or an average of $11,070 per show. In its second week, it grossed $101,118 in 48 theatres, with a cumulative total of $154,326.
On review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 29 per cent based on 73 reviews, and an average rating of 4.7 out of 10. On Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating to reviews, the film has a weighted average score of 46 out of 100 based on reviews from 29 critics, indicating mixed or average reviews.
Tickets for Rebel In The Rye are now available at The Gentry Espresso and Wine Bar as well as Tea and Other Things for $10. To get tickets at Tea, people must go to the side and downstairs between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The movie will start at 7 p.m.
