Folk band The Raven & The Fox will be playing Dec. 2 in Cochrane at the St. Andrew’s United Church as part of their B.C. and Alberta tour that started back on June 29 in Canmore.
Sean Isaac and Julie Chang started the band after meeting in 2013 when Chang travelled to Ontario to visit her sister. Isaac said the duo hit it off from there.
“I was pretty good friends with Julie’s sister so when she was visiting, we had an informal jam session at her sister’s house,” Isaac said.
“I immediately fell in love with Julie’s voice as well as her soon after. Julie told me her favourite song at the time was Ray Lamontange’s Jolene, which also happened to be mine so I learned how to play it on guitar in hopes she would sing it with me,”
“We played it our first time performing, which was about a year and a half later when she finally moved to Canmore. We kept playing at open mics and small café shows doing mainly cover songs.”
In 2015, the band released a demo EP of four songs with just Chang’s vocals accompanied by Isaac’s guitar, which then led them to start playing more shows and touring. In 2016, they began recording their first full-length album of 10 original songs that debuted in June of 2017. The Album titled The Raven & The Fox hit fourth of the national radio folk charts and first in Kamloops on CFBX radio.
The Raven & The Fox base most of their lyrics off of love and landscapes, something that Isaac said was chosen because both have meaning to him and Chang.
“Our main inspiration for music and songwriting from the start was our love for each other. Julie and I are a couple and our courtship, relationship and adventures together have fuelled many of our songs,” Isaac said.
“We also live in Canmore in the heart of the Canadian Rockies so it is hard not to pull inspiration from the surreal mountain scenery. We are both active, outdoor people … I am a certified climbing guide with the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides so the outdoors is a major part of my life.
“Our life in the mountains as well as travels to beautiful places like the Utah desert and Vancouver Island’s coastal rainforests are great songwriting fuel.”
General admissions for the show is $30.00 per person and are available at www.brownpapertickets.com.
