June 21 signifies the first day of summer and the Town of Cochrane has an abundance of events planned for the month of July, including the Canada Day holiday. JULY 1 Canada Day has many events going on throughout the day for the community to enjoy. There will be a pancake breakfast from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion. Cost to enjoy the fare is $3 for adults and $2 for children ages six-12. Children five and under get in free. The Legion will then host a Canada Day flag raising ceremony at 11 a.m., which will be followed by live entertainment. Also at 11 a.m., there will be an Empty Bowls Fundraiser at Addie's Creative Fabrics. People can get a bowl and a small meal for a $20 donation, with all the profits going toward Cochrane and area food banks. The event is being used to raise awareness that hunger is very real in the Town of Cochrane. Cochrane Area Events Society will be hosting its annual Canada Day Community Festival at Mitford Park throughout the day and into the evening with a jam-packed family festival to celebrate Canada's birthday. There will be many performances including Low Tide, Midnight Taiko Japanese Drummers, Stoney Dancers and fireworks starting at 11 p.m. Capture the Flag Paintball and Airsoft will be hosting a special Canada Day Airsoft Big Game going on all day. For more information call 403-932-9510. JULY 14 The Town of Cochrane will be hosting its annual Clubhouse Art Walk from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. located at the Historic Cochrane Ranche. Local artists show and sell their work, giving Cochrane and area art lovers the opportunity to meet the artists and learn about their creations. JULY 19 The monthly Cochrane Street Market will be going from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Historic Downtown. Cochrane businesses invite the community to experience a unique shopping experience, enjoy market vendors, artisans, food trucks, music, buskers and late-night shopping at local businesses. JULY 21 AND 22 July 21 is a busy day around town. Starting at 10 a.m. the Cochrane Public Library will be hosting Medieval Day. This free event will have pretend sword fights and jousting demonstrations for kids, demos and food trucks and vendor tents. If you come dressed in Medieval garb you receive a ribbon, resulting in fun for all ages. Cochrane Agricultural Society will be hosting a pair of events on July 21 and 22. First is the Dressage Show before the Extreme Cowboy Show, with both taking place at the Cochrane Agricultural Grounds both are free to the public. To conclude the weekend, on July 22 the Alberta Institute of Wildlife Conservation (AIWC) will be hosting a Crazy for Corvids on-site talk from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. Ravens, crows, jays and magpies are often regarded as pest species, yet are some of the most intelligent bird species around. This on-site talk focuses on their complex social structures, problem solving abilities, and the challenges that such clever animals present for local wildlife rehabilitators. A tour of sections of the AIWC facility will follow this presentation. For more information of these events, please visit www.cochrane-tourism.ca
