Cochrane’s fifth annual Lego competition is set to challenge the builders of tomorrow.

Registration for the town’s yearly Cochrane Lego Building Contest will remain open until March 1, said organizer Billy McLeod. That gives children a little more than a month to use their imaginations and create anything they choose out of colourful little plastic bricks before final designs go on display for judging at St. Andrew’s United Church on April 1.

Over the years, McLeod said she’s been impressed by the originality of Cochrane kids – whose entries have included a mini movie theatre, a ski hill, a swimming pool and a truck complete with functioning brake pedals and steering wheel.

Builders can use pieces from kits, but not full kits, to configure their contraptions.

Contestants are separated into age groupings and their pieces are entered into one of three categories: buildings/structures/landscapes/scenes, vehicles and transportation, or creative invention.

The entry fee is $8 and prizes are awarded in each division. McLeod said viewing is open to the public so everyone can see each other’s inspirations.

“It’s a great way to have a community event,” she said. “It’s something different, something fun for the kids.”

Registration for the fifth annual Lego building contest can be completed online at cochranelego.wufoo.com/forms/z1hbrajy1dnv929/.
