Chinook Film Group is bringing a unique film to Cochrane, with a showing of Loving Vincent at the Cochrane Movie House on Nov. 15.
The film is a 2017 biographical animated drama about the life of painter Vincent van Gogh … it is the first fully-painted animated feature film. Loving Vincent is written and directed by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman and was funded by the Polish Film Institute. The movie premiered at the 2017 Annecy International Animated Film Festival.
Each of the film’s 65,000 frames is an oil painting on canvas, using the same techniques as van Gogh, which was created by a team of 115 painters. The filmmakers chose to use classically-trained painters instead of traditional animators. There were close to 5,000 applicants who applied to be a part of the production.
The plot of the film takes place one year after the death of van Gogh, when postman Roulin requests that his son, Armand, personally deliver van Gogh’s last letter to van Gogh’s brother, Theo, after previous attempts to mail the item failed.
Armand has many stops along the way before finally reaching his destination and learning the truth about van Gogh’s death.
The movie won the Most Popular International Feature award at the 2017 Vancouver International Film Festival, and was nominated in the Hollywood Music in Media Awards 2017 for Best Original Score in an Animated Film.
For those interested in viewing Loving Vincent, tickets are available for $10 at the Gentry Espresso & Wine Bar as well as Tea and other things.
