More than 400 people took in the festivities of the Cochrane Library’s third offering of Medieval Day on Saturday. The day-long event featured a Viking village courtesy of the Versterheim Vikings and combat demonstrations from the Wardens of the Red Tower. This year was the first time Medieval Day hosted a writing contest for community youth. The winners were Simon O’Connor Romero, 11, for his story The Knight and original cover art; second was Abigail Varga, 11, for her story A Knight’s Story;. in third place was Marisa Thistle, 10, for her story A Medieval Story. Each winner was presented with an official certificate, a cash prize ($50 for first place, $35 for second, $15 for third) and were knighted by Mayor Jeff Genung if they attended the event. There will be an official display set up at the library where patrons can read the works.
