The recently opened Rebel Comics is inviting enthusiasts and those wanting to try the popular Magic The Gathering card game to its weekly game nights every Friday.
Wizards of the Coast first published the trading card game and a digital collectible card game created by Richard Garfield in 1993. It was the first trading card game produced and it continues to thrive with approximately twenty million players as of 2015.
Magic can be played by two or more players in various formats, which fall into one of two categories: constructed or limited. Limited formats involve players building a deck spontaneously out of a pool of random cards with a minimum deck size of 40 cards. In constructed, players create decks from cards they own, usually 60 cards with no more than four of any given card … the game is played in person with printed cards.
Rebel Comics co-owner and store manager Devin Petitclerc said the game nights, which have been going on annually since late September, have been a huge hit within the community.
“They’ve been going really well. We found out there was a huge community for magic cards in Cochrane and people never really had a place to go out and do that. So every second Saturday we do Dungeons and Dragons in here as well, to go along with our Friday card games,” Petitclerc said.
“It’s getting bigger and bigger every week. I think we have 10 registered players so far and it’s been really awesome. We’re sponsored by the creators, Wizards of the Coast … it’s quite the process to get registered, but through our program we register all our players’ scores and it gains reputation for the players and us at the store as well.”
Petitclerc says he’s also received some feedback as well from players who are hoping the store will expand the number of game nights.
“We’re looking into offering more games on different days, because not everyone can make it on Friday’s, but it seems to be the most convenient and it’s like the day that everyone plays magic cards,” Petiticlerc said.
“There’s six or seven different game types, so yes we’re looking into expanding.”
Those interested, the next time game night will be Dec. 22, starting at 6 p.m. Entry is $10; price includes food, drinks and chances to win prizes.
