A Bow Valley High School (BVHS) student’s creative passion all started with a reality show.

Lynay Wuthrich, 17, has been exploring the world of special effects makeup for the past couple of years, after watching American reality TV show Face Off, where contestants go through a series of competitions to design movie set characters using prosthetics and makeup.

“I asked for special effects makeup (two) Christmases ago,” Wuthrich said.

“It’s fascinating – you are only limited by your imagination,”

From holes in hands, to bite marks, to a Frankenstein’s-monster-like stitches around the wrist, Wuthrich has been consistently trying to improve and expand her skill set. The former student director for BVHS student play, Beauty and the Beast, was even asked to apply special effects makeup for the school’s haunted house ghouls last year.

“A lot of people seem to like it,” Wuthrich said.

“If you want to do something, you should try it – you can always go to something else. Everyone has their own style.”

Coming from a creative family, with a dad in music, mother in arts and music, and siblings dabbling in both, Wuthrich said she was always a creative child.

“I was always big into the arts,” Wuthrich said.

After receiving her FX makeup kit more than a year ago, the Bow Valley teen said she started to take inspiration from social media feeds, with a special interest in the “gory” makeup.

“I really liked to create the trauma wounds – things that mess with your mind,” she said with a laugh.

Finishing her last year of high school, Wuthrich said she is open to partnering with businesses and organizations that are interested in her craft, while also setting her sights on private film schools in B.C.

“I would like to work in film – there are a lot of theatre companies … but right now I just do it as a hobby for fun,” Wuthrich said.
