Young artists given large canvas to showcase their work

Cochrane Toyota is giving area youth windows of opportunity – literally – to showcase their western artwork.

Cochrane Toyota owner Alex Baum said he usually employs a professional artist to decorate 21 large windowpanes on his Riversong dealership to coincide with the annual Calgary Stampede – but this year, he wanted to offer the unique canvas to the kids of Cochrane and area instead, in the form of a youth art contest.

“Let’s give the young artists a canvas … to do what they can,” said Baum. “We want to see you come and do your best.”

Starting now, anyone under 21 years old can present a short proposal to Cochrane Toyota about what they plan to paint on a windowpane. Baum said the only stipulations are that the pieces must be western-themed and created with watercolour.

Artists can work on their large-form pieces during the first two weeks of July, and once the panes are all painted, fans on social media will vote on their favourite designs. Winners in three different age categories will receive a prize, with the windows remaining decorated until Labour Day.

“It should be fun,” said Baum.
