You know it’s not summer in Alberta without a few waterfall sightings. Alberta is blessed with an endless list of gorgeous waterfalls that never fail to take your breath away. Whether they’re the cherry on top of an incredible hike or a destination in their own right, waterfalls make you feel at one with nature in the most peaceful-yet-energizing way possible. The only issue can be access, and some of our province’s waterfalls are pretty tricky to get to. Well, not these!
This list will give you a little tour of seven stunning waterfalls in Alberta, all accessible and with minimal effort. Perfect for families, nature enthusiasts, or anyone seeking a dose of natural wonder without breaking a sweat.
Lundbreck Falls
Located near the tiny, little hamlet of Lundbreck, near Pincher Creek and the Crowsnest Pass in southern Alberta, lies Lundbreck Falls, a picturesque cascading waterfall just off Highway 3. The waterfall features a dramatic drop into the Crowsnest River and the beauty and you can see it all with just a short stroll from the parking area. This gorgeous place is perfect for a stop to enjoy the panoramic views.
You can view the falls from either side of the parking area, or take the stairs down to the river to get a little bit closer. The surrounding picnic areas and the sound of the water make for a peaceful day to enjoy nature at its finest. Whether you’re making a very dreamy pit-stop on a longer roadtrip or the falls are your end destination, you’re going to love it.
Bow Falls
The iconic Bow Falls are a must-see for any visitor to Banff National Park and are one of the most highly-visited waterfalls in Alberta. While the falls themselves are not very high, the sheer volume of water rushing over the rocks creates a mesmerizing scene. Located right in the heart of town, a scenic walking path leads from the town of Banff to the falls, offering a powerful display of nature’s raw beauty. Or, you can drive right up and forget about the walking entirely. Visit during early summer when the snowmelt is at its peak for the most impressive experience. You won’t believe the power of the water that explodes over these falls.
Elbow Falls
Elbow Falls is a favourite for locals and visitors alike. The falls are located approximately 20 km west of Bragg Creek from Highway 66 in Kananaskis Country and you can hear the sound of the water cascading almost as soon as you step out of your car. Just a short walk from the parking lot takes you to the falls and offers stunning views of the Elbow River and the rocky terrain surrounding it. It’s a perfect spot for a family outing, with plenty of photo ops along the way. This place is the essence of instant gratification and you won’t believe that this baby is hiding right in plain sight.
Cameron Falls
Here we have another little beauty that can be found in one of Alberta’s national parks. In the quaint town of Waterton, Cameron Falls is an easily accessible year-round natural attraction located on the corner of the townsite in Waterton Lakes National Park.
The area around the falls is well-developed, with walking paths and bridges from which you can admire the falls and the gorgeous scenery. The walkway is wheelchair accessible making it ideal for all ages and abilities. You won’t want to forget your camera for this beauty. It may be a little bit of a walk, but it’s quick, easy, and beyond worth it for the views you’re about to be treated to.
Johnston Canyon
This one will take you a bit of a longer walk to get to, but the trails to the upper and lower waterfalls of Johnston Canyon are easy, well-maintained and suitable for all ages and abilities. The lower falls are just a short stroll from the parking area, and the path is scenic, with catwalks leading you along the sides of the limestone cliffs. We’re willing to bet that this place has earned spots on bucket lists around the world, so you should probably go see it for yourself. Be sure to arrive early to avoid the crowds, it’s a popular destination given its easy access over a relatively short distance.
Tangle Creek Falls
Easily visible from the Icefields Parkway, in Jasper National Park, Tangle Creek Falls cascades elegantly over a series of rocky tiers. This waterfall is perfect for travellers who want to stretch their legs, as it’s just steps away from the roadside. The accessibility and breathtaking views make it a popular spot for a photo op against a backdrop of stunning scenery. It’s hard to believe something so stunning can be as easy to access as a roadside rest stop!
Ram Falls
Ram Falls is located within the Ram Falls Provincial Park, approximately 60 km south of Nordegg. The waterfall drops majestically into the Ram River and is viewed from a well-positioned lookout point that requires a short walk from the nearby campground. The remote location means fewer visitors, allowing for a quiet, undisturbed nature experience.
