I note that the Chinook Film Group (CFG) is screening An Inconvenient Sequel, a sequel to Al Gore’s earlier “documentary,” An Inconvenient Truth (2006). Occurring in the Cochrane Eagle’s entertainment section of the paper and described as “Gore’s continuing mission to battle climate change,” that is, to battle the weather, the film should, indeed, be entertaining.
To pump up interest and try to give the film some credibility, the review website Rotten Tomatoes was cited as having an approval rating of 78 per cent for the film. Recently, Netflix began streaming the first season of Big Mouth, a half-hour, animated “edgy comedy” (their words), which portrays adolescence as a time of sexual obsession and experimentation where virtually anything goes. And Big Mouth garnered a coveted 100 per cent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes! I invite the reader to check out Big Mouth, watch some of the trailers, and then decide whether Rotten Tomatoes’ 78 per cent rating for Gore’s film is something to crow about.
In November 2015, CFG screened This Changes Everything, based upon socialist Naomi Klein’s book, This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate. I submitted a letter to the editor, titled “Only fair to offer another perspective,” to one of the Cochrane papers, which unfortunately was not published. I concluded my letter saying, “In the interest of fairness to represent both sides of the debate, I very much hope that Murray Mitchell, the film group’s programmer, arranges to also bring a film such as The Great Global Warming Swindle that presents the opposite perspective.”
Noticing an ongoing willingness in June 2016 to allow an open debate on the issue of climate change with the publication of counter-views in the local papers, I wrote to Mr. Mitchell, sending him a copy of my unpublished letter to the editor from November 2015, and appealed to him, in the interest of fairness and balance, to consider showing The Great Global Warming Swindle. Disappointingly, I didn’t receive an acknowledgement of receipt of my letter from Mr. Mitchell.
Once again, in the interest of fairness, to present the opposite perspective, I would invite the CFG to consider showing Climate Hustle a 2016 film produced by CFACT (Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow) and CDR Communications. The film reveals the history of climate scares predicting a calamitous future due to global warming (including many unfulfilled prophecies by Al Gore), and more.
