I am a mail carrier that is looking at possible lock out in the not so distant future. I am worried that the corporation, through a well-financed media campaign, will use misdirection and innuendo to portray the workers as greedy and inflexible.
The truth is we are asking for equality and fair pay, while proposing expanded services and innovative products. The response we have received has been to attack our pension, benifits and reductions in service.
Our message is clear, with expansion into postal banking, broadband hubs and the restoration of door-to-door services, the Canadian consumer retains what the Postal Charter guarantees while ensuring future growth.
The corporation's message is clear as well. Cuts. To your service and our jobs. Why? That is a good question, as there have been millions in profits recorded – more than $40 million for the first quarter of this year already.
I fear, as all Canadian postal workers do, for my pension, my health benefits and my job. I hope that Canadian citizens show they care about their postal service by writing their MP and telling them that, "cuts are unacceptable," and by taking part in the Canada Post review being performed by the government.
