Dear Editor: I am responding to a letter to the editor published on June 21, 2018 Carbon tax is necessary If letter writer Alan Spiller (Carbon Tax is necessary, June 21st) is deeply concerned that a new conservative government will "let Albertans continue to see their cost of living skyrocket," why does he support carbon taxes? The Canadian Taxpayers Federation estimates that a federal carbon tax will cost the average Canadian family at least $2,500 annually. Spiller seems to justify carbon taxes as a necessary and urgent sacrifice we need to make in order to protect the future for our grandchildren. All sensible people want to enjoy clean air, land, and water and we like to think that future generations will live in an even better environment than we do. However, the hypothesis that humanity's carbon dioxide emissions are causing dangerous climate change problems is being increasingly called into question. We need to distance ourselves from the ideologically-driven climate scare and focuse instead on issues we know to be real, immediate and things we can truly affect and improve. Sincerely, Tom Harris, B. Eng., M. Eng. (Mech.) Executive Director International Climate Science Coalition (ICSC)
