After reading the last issue of the Cochrane Eagle, I could not believe the lengthy article espousing before town council the great benefits of allowing urban hens in a residential neighborhood. First of all, why our councillors would waste their time and my tax money on such a notion is beyond me.
I grew up in the country on a mixed farm with pigs, cattle and even chickens and I know something about their behavior and I can state empathically that a residential neighborhood is no place for any of them.
Allowing a so-called pilot project is a backdoor way of getting their foot in the door and this idea should also be nipped in the bud from the outset.
This is a slippery slope if approved … why not allow the rearing of a pair of lambs so I can serve rack of lamb or how about allowing a pair of weanling pigs so I can have home-grown pork chops later in the season? C’mon lets get serious!
The bottom line is this: if the proponents want to raise chickens, go buy an acreage or farm like everyone else has had to do for decades. NIMBY thank-you.
Now with the greatest respect to members of our town council, please get on with dealing with the most important issues that face our community, such as traffic congestion, construction of the second bridge, completing the Quarry development, enhancing senior affordable housing, and building a modern and functional community arts centre.
