Consultation on farm rules booked

The consultation framework for farm and ranch safety legislation has been announced.

The consultation framework for farm and ranch safety legislation has been announced. As promised the government will consult widely with farmers, ranchers and other stakeholders to design workplace regulations that reflect the unique nature of the farm and ranch industry in Alberta. Input is needed from farmers and ranchers on how to best implement the occupational heath and safety, labour relations and employment standards legislation, as well as determining what supports the industry might need from government. For employment standards and labour relations, consultations will also cover possible special provisions for the farm and ranch industry. There will be ongoing consultation around technical standards for the Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) code. Consultations will be designed to allow farmers, ranchers, industry representatives and other stakeholders to provide input prior to government drafting regulations, and after regulations are drafted. Work will also be undertaken to research and review regulations in other provinces where similar laws already exist. The consultations will centre around six engagement tables with representatives from a broad diversity of agriculture operations. Chairpersons and members of the tables will be appointed by February 1, 2016. Representatives will include those from the agricultural producer groups, municipal governments, agriculture services boards, labour, and individual producers and employees, including those in a group ownership model. Each engagement table will have a specific area of focus, and consult widely. Namely, the tables are: (1) employment standards; (2) labour relations; (3) OH&S general regulations; (4) OH&S best practices within existing Alberta farming operations; (5) unique OH&S considerations & interpretation in Alberta farming operations; and (6) OH&S technical rules, training, and certification.
