While disagreeing with Mr. Carbert’s position, it was never my intention to suggest that he held any hatred towards the LGBT community. I do, however, detect a degree of arrogance in the statement that he is older than all the respondents and therefore (implied) wiser. I hope that in my 73 years I may also have acquired some insights into the problems that community faces.
His analogy to the “cliff” has some merit. However, it is not the “brink” they are looking at but rather a looming cliff made up of centuries of hatred, misunderstanding and bigotry, without which their lives would enjoy the same highs and lows as the rest of society. They don’t ask to be cured or saved because they believe in themselves and their lifestyles. All they need is understanding and the source for that should be their families.
It is particularly unfortunate that historically the least understanding has always emanated from major religious institutions, some of which would still condemn them to death. But on a lighter note, maybe we are simply misinterpreting the Bible. When it says, “If a man lies with another man, they should be stoned”, perhaps Leviticus was merely an enlightened early advocate for marijuana.
