Curling is no longer a growing sport

Dear editor: First and foremost, I must commend councillor Morgan Nagel for his stand on the proposed curling/aquatic centre.

My primary concern as a long-time curler in Cochrane and elsewhere is the facts clearly demonstrate that curling is no longer a growing sport. We are substantially under-utilizing our present four-sheet facility and there is no way the proposed new six-sheet rink is needed, especially given the projected cost of at least $10 million. If built it would not only be an added cost to taxpayers, but in all likelihood it would add an extra burden to curlers through higher user fees.

It’s time town administration and council go back to the drawing board and seriously reassess this whole project...if they don’t, then a plebiscite may be the only recourse to show concerned citizens are serious and are in no mood to accept wasteful spending at any level.
