Get out and volunteer

Dear editor:

With National Volunteer week coming up, does anyone wonder why people volunteer?

For me it’s all about being part of the community, and we all know volunteering is alive and well in our town. It’s about doing something you enjoy and meeting some amazing people along the way. It may be fundraising for a new playground, delivering hot meals to seniors, sitting on a board or organizing amazing events, such as our Labour Day Parade or Cochrane Light Up.

But do you ever look around and see the same faces stepping up each time? A lady once said to me that she doesn’t volunteer. I could have offered a few choice words but I actually felt a little sad, as she has no idea what she’s missing out on.

When reading last week’s article regarding the Cochrane Rangers, I was a little surprised to read that according to the interviewee, “Unfortunately, last year’s club support was a little bit lacking”. As someone who enjoyed a few years on the board of the Rangers with some amazing people, volunteering countless hours (and time spent away from my children) the only thing lacking last year was support by just a few individuals to the hard working volunteers.

Instead of negativity, let’s all celebrate and support the amazing volunteers who keep this town the amazing place it is to live. I know many amazing people who give so much of their time, one in particular in our neighbourhood, who goes above and beyond to put on many fun events to boost community spirit.
