Dear editor:
I was so glad to see the editorial ‘Speedy Gonzales’ in your paper Sept. 25.
I live in Glenbow and see on a daily bases people ripping past my house, and although there have been speed monitors regularly placed around Glenpatrick Dr./Glenpatrick Rd., I’m not sure this has helped.
I’ve also seen at times law enforcement parked along this route, but lately only during the time school begins and ends.
If one couldn’t see them perhaps this would be a difference.
I just came back from Germany and they have the best traffic laws in the world, and with a large population, they need to move traffic efficiently.
The penalties for offences are much higher than ours.
Here are a few examples: The driver is not responsible if a pedestrian is hit outside a marked crosswalk or when jay-walking; on most highways (Autobahn) or especially two-lane highways, all trucks over five tons must only use the right lane (not many here, and I include semi trucks, ever pay attention to ‘keep right except to pass); distracted driving (cellphone) nets a fine of about $250 Euros; and offences for drinking and driving are much more severe.
Our governments should take a close look at that if they want to see a noticeable difference.
