Dear editor:

These words describe the Army Cadets Corps and their parents:

Recently, I hired the Corps to assist me with an event I was working on. They were eager to jump on board, as they are fundraising to attend the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge in 2017. As a child of the war years, this venture alone struck a chord with me. They were to begin at 7 a.m. and work until around midnight in shifts.

Then, unimaginable tragedy struck. The sudden death of one of their own; by all accounts an outstanding young man.

The service for this young cadet was scheduled for the same day as my event. Before, I had a chance to say, “I understand you can’t help me,” Kara Hughes, with tears in her eyes and a catch in her voice, informed me that the parents were stepping in to keep the commitment to our event.

Here is my thought: following in the tradition of the men and women who served us in the world wars and missions around the globe, these young cadets, supported by their parents, are people of honour keeping their word no matter what.

I invite you to help the cadets go to Vimy Ridge; contact [email protected].
