Cochrane women looking to give back in a big way are encouraged to join forces with a local chapter that is readying to break its $100,000 goal while topping up memberships at its Nov. 20 meeting. "It's a fantastic feeling – you walk into a meeting with $100 and you walk out and you've given eight or 10 thousand," said 100 Women Who Care – Cochrane Chapter member Leslie Deans. "We're looking for some new members ... all you do is show up," said Deans, adding that the next meeting will be held at the Venue Bar and Grill on Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. and is being flagged as "bring a friend night." To date, the chapter has raised $93,065 to go toward local charities. Recent recipients include the Cochrane Activettes (food bank); Friends of Fireside (inclusive playground); Camp fYrefly Calgary; Helping Hands Society of Cochrane; Food For Thought RVS; and William Watson Lodge Society. The 100 Women Who Care Alliance started in Jackson, Miss. in 2006 by Karen Dunigan with the idea that 100 women could bring $100 and donate one hour of their time four times per year. Simple rules outline that members nominate their favourite charities by ballot and of those, three are selected as beneficiaries from that meeting. Successful recipients must have a charitable status and serve at a local level.. The local chapter is registered with the 100 Who Care Alliance For more info visit 100womencochrane.com.
