A cause worth playing for

What was originally billed as a team fundraiser, took on a whole new level of emotion when the Cochrane High School (CHS) Cobras varsity basketball team took to the court against the Calgary Stampeders Feb. 28 in support of Brock Wiebe.

The crowd was primed from the energized affair between the Cobras and the Stampeders at the CHS Cobradome, as Lorna Wiebe stepped to the mic in front of more than 450 supporters to share her gratitude for the efforts they’ve made to help her son, Brock.

Brock didn’t suffer from any kind of accident; he was diagnosed with cancer less than one month ago.

But, just like Brock continues to fight, so do his teammates and fellow Cochranites on the court for their comrade.

“Wow, what a bunch of nice young men,” said Lorna of the basketball teams and school that came together to support their teammate, student and friend.

“The support has been overwhelming, it’s definitely a roller-coaster,” she said. “You get tears because of what has happened and then you get tears because of this amazing support, and I don’t even know how to begin to say thank you.”

The night raised over $7,000 to help support the Wiebe family, as Brock goes through chemotherapy. But Lorna said that even without the fundraiser portion, it’s just nice to know through sport, they have a large family.

“Brock has come up through football and basketball,” said Lorna, “so this is our extended family, these are the people we sit in the stands with, cheering on our kids who’ve grown up together.”
