Musician. Songwriter. Guitar teacher. Bookings agent. Store manager. Sound tech. Show producer.
There are many hats worn by Legacy Guitar and Coffee House’s resident music man, Angus Wilson, who will be closing the 2013 season for the local live music venue with a live show on Dec. 7 at 8 p.m.
When he’s not busy performing and recording with his alt-rock four-piece, Stoning Mary, Wilson is cultivating his solo show, acoustic rock in flavour.
“What am I? A songwriter, a producer, a teacher…I guess I’m all those things,” laughed Wilson. “As I say that, I’m cringing at how it could be a problem to balance it all in the future.”
Most multi-faceted musicians would agree: the juggling act at the core of the modern musician can be laborious. Yet, it can also be empowering.
For Wilson, there’s no lull in creative expression – be it booking, producing and running the sound for hot ticket Live at Legacy Saturday nights, or writing and producing the next-in-line album for Stoning Mary.
Fresh from a successful five-day album recording session at a rented house in Drumheller, Wilson said the album is shaping up to be a 10-song full-length release.
“I’ve been writing a lot for this album – there’s a bunch of new songs that we recorded that haven’t even been played on stage yet,” said Wilson.
With twin brother, Bryan, on drums and percussion, Marc Eshleman on lead guitar and Joel Fraser on bass, Wilson said he feels at home with his brethren of band mates, formed nearly seven years ago.
“They’re all fantastic musicians on their own…for me, I wanted a band that had a group dynamic,” said Wilson, who fronts, writes and does the bulk of producing for the band but is grateful for the creative input and behind-the-scenes contributions made by each band member.
Stoning Mary is aiming to release their sophomore album in early 2014.
The soulful solo side of Wilson has been influenced by his progression as an artist, as well as his work as a guitar teacher.
Wilson is looking at bringing a couple of guest musicians on stage on Dec. 7. For tickets or more info, visit legacyguitarhouse.com.
