People’s freezers will get a bit fuller thanks to a new collaborative partnership between two local organizations and Calgary Meals on Wheels.

The Cochrane Activettes along with Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) are bringing a new meal delivery service to Cochrane called Meals on Wheels for Your Freezer.

The effort — utilizing the Meals on Wheels program in Calgary, which has been established for 48 years — is intended for those in the community who are in need of a prepared meal-delivery service, including people who have recently had surgery, those with illnesses and seniors.

“Sometimes there is a fine line between being able to live independently at home and needing to live in a care facility,” Activettes vice-president Kathy Haigh said in a press release. “Often, the provision of healthy meals makes that difference.”

Meals on Wheels for Your Freezer offers 16 various entrees, providing pork dishes, beef, chicken, fish and no-meat offerings.

Meals will be prepared by Calgary Meals on Wheels and will be diabetic-friendly. Entrees will cost $6 and there will be a five-meal minimum order and a one-time $5 administration fee to register for the program at FCSS.

“These nutritious, quick meals will help many individuals who struggle to prepare meals,” said FCSS manager and social planner Susan Flowers.

FCSS will place meal orders on Mondays at noon, with the Activettes delivering the frozen entrees the following week on Wednesday.

Containers used for the meal will be recyclable.

Meals To Go, a lunchtime delivery service provided by Big Hill Lodge and coordinated by the Activettes, will continue. The program, which provides fresh meals to seniors in Cochrane, has been running for years, and has become so popular that it has garnered a wait-list.

Meals on Wheels for Your Freezer is a pilot, satellite operation for the successful Calgary program, and is made possible by the coordination of the Activettes and FCSS.

“A person’s quality of life may improve dramatically when they are well nourished,” said Haigh.
