For Sue Penry, the most important component to her artwork is the emotional response it draws from an audience.
“When people view my art, I want them to be in touch with themselves and to feel something,” said Penry, who calls Cochrane home. “I work from that aspect — to put as much of my soul on display in an effort to connect with other people.”
For this reason her upcoming gallery showing, Pieces of Soul, is aptly named. The art show and sale is hosted by Cochrane Arts Central and is set to run Nov. 24 from noon to 4 p.m.
This is the budding artist’s first official showing, although she’s been painting regularly since 2004. A graphic designer by trade, Penry paints predominately in acrylic. About 20 pieces of her artwork will be on display at the show and sale.
“As an artist, this (show) is the next step for me,” said Penry, adding that she’s working towards pursuing art fulltime. “I’m at a point where I feel really comfortable with my art and I’m ready to share it with other people.”
Marla Blackwell, owner of Cochrane Arts Central, described Penry’s work as a mixture of abstract and impressionistic.
“She has an interesting way of mixing cool and warm colours,” Blackwell said about the artist. “She used mainly a cool palette, but always throws in a splash of warmth. It’s her palette that makes her work unique.”
Blackwell said the art venue is moving towards presenting solo shows featuring emerging local talent. Refreshments will be provided for show attendees.
