Cochrane RCMP have one man in custody following an attempted robbery at Happy’s Liquor Store on Nov. 6.
In the early evening hours, Kamal Singh, an employee at the liquor store, was sitting in his car when he saw a female customer struggling to open the front door.
“First I thought, 'Something is wrong with the door.' Then I checked properly. There was a guy, he was smashing [the front] door from inside the store, ” Singh said.
There was bear spray deployed inside the store, but so far Cochrane RCMP said it is too early to determine who is responsible.
“We’re still trying to determine if [the bear spray] was (deployed by) the person in custody or the store owners or some other third party, ” said Cst. Richard Holdenried, one of the responding officers.
Holdenried said there were no injuries. The male is currently in custody for theft but the charges could be upgraded to robbery, following an investigation.
When the Eagle arrived at the scene, there were several customers outside coughing from the deployed bear spray fumes and warning others not to enter.
