Fire crews from Rocky View County and Cochrane battled a massive blaze that tore through a Bearspaw estate the afternoon of March 18.

Emergency responders were alerted to the fire on Woodlands Estate Crescent by one of the homeowners at about 4 p.m. Dax Huba, Rocky View County District Chief, said the resident reported the fire after she was met by smoke while attempting to pull a vehicle into the garage. Closer inspection indicated the living area of the home was on fire. Huba said it is unknown how long the fire burned before it was reported.

“By the time firefighters arrived on scene, the home was fully involved, ” said Huba, noting it took about 15 minutes for crews to arrive on scene.

It took crews about four hours to extinguish the flames. Rocky View County crews from Springbank, Balzac and Madden, along with Cochrane firefighters, had their work cut out for them.

“The way the wind pushed the fire across the roofline - it made it difficult to control the flames, ” Huba remarked. All of the residents of the home are safe and sound.

The multi-million dollar home is a total loss. As of press time, it was not known what sparked the blaze.

A fire hall is currently in the works for the Bearspaw area. It’s slated to be up and running for July.
