The development of a pathway adjacent to Highway 8 is on to the next phase in its development, said Jeff Quigley, municipal lands specialist for Rocky View County.
But they have to wait until the county announces the 2013 budget in April before proceeding further, he added.
“We’re taking baby steps,” said Quigley. “We’re making progress, but the development involves a lot of stakeholders. Construction is not something we’re looking at right now.”
Currently, the pathway is in its third phase, which involved putting together a committee to provide insight and guidance on the development and implementation of the trail. Quigley said an initiative has been put forward to provide funding for the project in the latest budget. This funding would go towards detail design — not construction.
The development will see the construction of a pedestrian and bicycle pathway adjacent to Highway 8, reaching from the Calgary city limits to the traffic circle at the junction of Highway 22. Eventually, Quigley said the pathway would branch off to head towards Bragg Creek and Kananaskis.
Quigley said construction of the project would be timed to begin alongside Alberta Transportation’s future plans to twin Highway 8, but added that the twinning project is currently not in the province’s three-year construction plan.
Details on the pathway development are available on the county’s website at rockyview.ca.
