Big Band Dance brings swing, jazz to Cochrane

Attendees for tonight’s (May 22) Celebration of Music will be getting a taste of the jazz sound to be highlighted during the Cochrane Music Society’s upcoming Big Band Dance.

To be held June 8 at the Cochrane RancheHouse, the 10th running of the Big Band Dance promises partygoers a fun night full of great music, said Jane Kaczmer, the society’s treasurer and advertising coordinator.

The evening will feature performances by the Cochrane Music Society’s jazz ensemble Riverside Jazz, Calgary’s Midnight Blue Jazz Band and Bow Valley High School’s Phat Young Cow.

“It’s always a swinging success,” said Kaczmer, who will be playing her trumpet in the performance by Riverside Jazz. “There will be swing music, jazz music, Latin music… we’re expecting the dance floor to be crowded all night.”

BVHS music program’s Phat Young Cow will kick off the evening with their sound, which recently earned them a gold medal at Halifax’s Atlantic Festival of Music. Riverside Jazz — fresh off a warm-up performance during the Celebration of Music — and Midnight Blue will alternate performances for the remainder of the evening, with the Calgary band taking the stage for the final set.

Kaczmer said the event will boast a variety of jazz, from smooth tones to blues and everything in between.

In addition to the music, attendees can spend the evening snacking, mingling and quenching their thirst at the cash bar.

“People who have come to the event in the past always come back,” said Kaczmer. “They always have such a good time.”

“The event brings something different to Cochrane,” she added. “There’s a strong folk and country music feel to this community, so the society works to bring another kind of music to Cochrane.”

There are still tickets available for the 10th annual Big Band Dance at the Cochrane RancheHouse June 8. Admission is $25 a person. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the dance will run from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Riverside Jazz will be debuting their set during Wednesday night’s Celebration of Music at the Cochrane Alliance Church at 7:30 p.m. The free event — food bank donations will be welcomed — will also feature the sounds of the society’s choir, Choral Waves, and Band on the Bow.
