Whether you’re apt to throwing strikes, spares or gutter balls, the Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) Bowl for Kids’ Sake fundraising event has set a high goal for its inaugural running in Cochrane.

The bowling event, which has run nationwide for a number of years, will be coming to Cochrane April 14. Teams will hit the wooden alleys at Cochrane Lanes beginning at 2 p.m.

The event is anticipated to wrap up around 7:30 p.m.

“You don’t have to be a rock-star bowler, you just need to let loose and help raise money and awareness of the program,” said Sandra Mackenzie, program coordinator for BBBS serving Cochrane and Rocky View County.

The bowl-a-thon-style fundraiser will pit teams against each other for a few hours of bowling related activities, including “glow” bowling, bowling bingo and an appearance by Calgary Stampeder Rob Cote.

Prizes will be up for grabs, as will bragging rights, but the real winner will be the Cochrane and area program.

“All the money raised will remain here to support the local program,” said Mackenzie. “We want to grown the program in Cochrane and we can’t grow without support.”

A fundraising goal of $5,000 has been set, she added.

Teams — consisting of four or five bowlers — can register for a time slot online. Each team must raise a minimum of $300 in pledges. Individual players can registers as well, and must raise at least $75 to play. Registration includes snacks, door prizes and shoes.

Mackenzie said BBBS staff and volunteers will be on hand to answer questions and provide information about the programming offered in the Cochrane area. Currently there are 65 BBBS matches in Cochrane across four different programs, she added.
