Bats and basins are the big topics this year at the annual Living in the Natural Environment forum presented by the Municipal District of Bighorn, Bow River Basin Council and a number of other sponsors.

The event will take place Feb. 6 from 5 – 9 p.m. at the Cochrane RancheHouse.

“We try to pick topics that are both thought provoking, as well as educational, and hopefully they are of interest to people that are attending and live in the surrounding area,” said Kendra Tippe, assistant environmental fieldperson with the MD of Bighorn.

The first talk is ‘flood, land uses and landscapes of the upper Bow River Basin: causes, consequences and risk mitigation’ presented by Dr. Brad Stelfox.

Tippe said that the 2013 flood is still current in a lot of people’s minds, so Stelfox will be sharing a unique glimpse of the history of the area as well as the future and present land uses that define the basin.

Next up will be a talk on the ‘biology and conservation of Alberta bats’ presented by Cory Olson.

“Not a lot of people realize the amount of benefits that bats have on our environment,” said Tippe.

There will also be a trade show going on during the breaks, where local organizations and sponsors will be set up.

Tickets are $35, which includes a dinner, and there will be a cash bar. For more details call 403-673-3611.
